FPGAs, multi-core, PCIe advance virtual test

At present, forward technology trends bring engineers persistent pressure and challenges. One trend we can see is the proliferation of standards, such as in the wireless communication industry. Many different protocols exist side by side today, but there is no dominant protocol. The challenge for design and test engineers here is that the old approach for test needed a dedicated box for each standard. This worked well when devices had a single protocol and standards lasted for years. Now, devices obviously have more protocols and standards are changing almost every year.

Test instrumentation is thus undergoing a fundamental change-from fixed-functionality stand-alone instruments to flexible software-based modular instrument architecture that can be redefined by the user. Taking advantage of the features of virtual instrumentation, engineers can confront the challenges above effectively. They can use software to develop different codes for diversified protocols, and they can also select specific modules for functionality.

At present, virtual instrumentation is used in all fields of measurement and automation. More and more engineers create high-performance and expandable test systems with the help of virtual instrumentation. A new era of instrumentation is coming.
